I built an AI app mostly using AI

Hey Reader - Simon here 👋

A few years ago, building a mobile app like this would have taken me weeks.

Not because the code was really difficult.

But because there were so many moving pieces:

Authentication. Payments. AI. Storage. APIs.

This week I want to show you how you build serious React Native apps with AI, while still staying in control.

🎥 I Built an AI Voice Notes App with React Native (Mostly Using AI)

In my new video, I built a complete AI-powered voice notes app using React Native.

But there was one rule:

I wanted AI agents to do as much of the development work as possible.

Using tools like Claude Code, Cursor, MCPs, and modern AI APIs, I went from idea to a working app that can:

  • record voice notes
  • transcribe speech to text
  • generate summaries, todos and titles
  • handle authentication and subscriptions

Along the way I also integrated:

If you’re looking for a way to build and ship apps faster, check out my workflow and build your own AI Voice Notes app!

💭 A few thoughts this week

Building this AI Voice Notes app reminded me of something I’ve been thinking about for months:

AI is not replacing developers.

It’s replacing a lot of the repetitive work around development.

The bottleneck was never writing code.

It's understanding tradeoffs and keeping the project moving in the right direction.

In many ways, the new developer role feel less like “programmer” and more like “director" to me now.

You’re still responsible for the outcome.

You just have a much larger team now.

🛠 What I’m building

Last weekend I finally completed my Olympic-distance triathlon.

It took up a surprising amount of mental bandwidth over the last months, so it’s nice to have that chapter wrapped up.

On the Tiny Harvest side, I shipped a bug-fix release last week and I’m now working on the next season pass.

And honestly, I’m excited to spend more time creating content again.

I’ve got a few ideas I’m eager to explore around AI and indie apps.

That’s it for this week - back to building.

Curious:

What’s the most impressive thing you’ve built with AI so far?

See you next week,
Simon

Hey Reader - Simon here 👋 It’s been a while. For the first time in a long time, I basically took a month off from YouTube and this newsletter. Summer holidays happened, I spent a lot of time with my family, tinkered on Tiny Harvest whenever I felt like it… …and honestly, it was pretty nice. But school is starting again, I’m slowly getting back into work, and there’s A LOT I want to build and share over the next months. Starting with something that has changed quite a bit for Tiny Harvest. 🎥 I...

Hey Reader - Simon here 👋 in the past, I probably spent more time tweaking my development setup than I’d like to admit. Every now and then I’ll discover a new tool and think: “How did I build apps without this?” This week I wanted to share the tools that have genuinely become part of my daily workflow - not because they’re shiny, but because they actually save me time. 🎥 React Native Tools That Actually Save Time There are a lot of dev tools out there. Some are fun to try. Some disappear after...

Hey Reader - Simon here 👋 After a week on (hot!) Mallorca, I’m finally back at my desk with fresh motivation. One thing I always enjoy after taking a short break is looking at other people’s work. You notice small details again. The things that feel polished. The things that don’t. And that’s exactly what this week’s video is about. 🎥 I reviewed 3 Apps that were made with Ai Building apps has never been easier. Building a good app is still surprisingly hard. In this episode I reviewed three...
