I built an AI app mostly using AI

Hey Reader - Simon here 👋

A few years ago, building a mobile app like this would have taken me weeks.

Not because the code was really difficult.

But because there were so many moving pieces:

Authentication. Payments. AI. Storage. APIs.

This week I want to show you how you build serious React Native apps with AI, while still staying in control.

🎥 I Built an AI Voice Notes App with React Native (Mostly Using AI)

In my new video, I built a complete AI-powered voice notes app using React Native.

But there was one rule:

I wanted AI agents to do as much of the development work as possible.

Using tools like Claude Code, Cursor, MCPs, and modern AI APIs, I went from idea to a working app that can:

  • record voice notes
  • transcribe speech to text
  • generate summaries, todos and titles
  • handle authentication and subscriptions

Along the way I also integrated:

If you’re looking for a way to build and ship apps faster, check out my workflow and build your own AI Voice Notes app!

💭 A few thoughts this week

Building this AI Voice Notes app reminded me of something I’ve been thinking about for months:

AI is not replacing developers.

It’s replacing a lot of the repetitive work around development.

The bottleneck was never writing code.

It's understanding tradeoffs and keeping the project moving in the right direction.

In many ways, the new developer role feel less like “programmer” and more like “director" to me now.

You’re still responsible for the outcome.

You just have a much larger team now.

🛠 What I’m building

Last weekend I finally completed my Olympic-distance triathlon.

It took up a surprising amount of mental bandwidth over the last months, so it’s nice to have that chapter wrapped up.

On the Tiny Harvest side, I shipped a bug-fix release last week and I’m now working on the next season pass.

And honestly, I’m excited to spend more time creating content again.

I’ve got a few ideas I’m eager to explore around AI and indie apps.

That’s it for this week - back to building.

Curious:

What’s the most impressive thing you’ve built with AI so far?

See you next week,
Simon

Hey Reader - Simon here 👋 many of you lately ask me the same question: "What AI tools do you actually use?" The honest answer is... It's not really about the tools. It's about the workflow. Over the last months I've slowly built a setup that lets me go from an idea to a shipped feature much faster than I ever did before. This week I wanted to show you exactly what that looks like. 🎥 How I Build Apps with AI in 2026 Instead of reviewing another AI tool, I walk through the complete workflow I...

Hey Reader - Simon here 👋 For a few weeks, I thought Tiny Harvest had finally found its new normal. Downloads were going up.Revenue was increasing.Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction. Then, almost overnight, it slowed down again. Nothing had changed about the game. Just the distribution. And that taught me one of the biggest lessons I’ve had as an indie developer... 🎥 My Mobile Game Made $5,000… Then Everything Changed In this week’s video I break down what happened after...

Hey Reader - Simon here 👋 For years, everything I did has been pretty straightforward: I taught React Native. And honestly, that worked really well. I'm grateful for everything that came through this, and the opportunities I got. But over the last few months, I’ve noticed changes. And it's not just in software dev. It's also in me. 🎥 Why This Channel Is Changing This week’s video is a bit different. No tutorial. No coding challenge. Just an honest update on where my head is at and where I...
